Gynecomastia / Male Boob

Gynecomastia is the benign enlargement of male breast. It is the most common breast condition in males. Gynecomastia is physiologically normal and transient during the neonatal period, puberty, and in old age due to transient physiologic response to the balance of androgens and estrogens in the body. Gynecomastia can have significant social, emotional, and psychological impacts on adolescents and young individuals. Due to prominent breast they feel embracement by wearing tight shirts and swimming costumes.
Persistent or asymmetric gynecomastia should be evaluated by a thorough history and physical exam.
If exogenous causes are controlled and the patient’s gynecomastia persists for at least 1 year, liposuction or surgical treatment is
warranted.
Treatment options vary depending on the severity of the gynecomastia. Mild gynecomastia (grade 1 and 2) usually treated only by liposuction but moderate to severe types (grade 3 and 4) are corrected surgically. Liposuction in gynecomastia, removes excessive fat from the chest and making it more smooth and muscular.
Operative procedures are designed to remove the excess glandular and fatty tissue, reduce the diameter of the nipple areolar complex, and achieve symmetry.
